Emergency Preparedness

As we continue the fight against COVID-19, we know that we remain at risk of other disasters and natural hazards, including flooding, storms and wildfires. Here you will find links and resources to help you and your family better prepare for possible disasters.

 Know the Risks
Across Canada, we face a number of natural hazards, which can vary from region to region. Knowing what to do is an important part of being prepared.  In Ontario, regional risks may include flooding, severe storms, forest fires, and transportation accidents. Being prepared and knowing what to do in advance could save your life, and those of your loved ones.
 Make a Plan
In an emergency, your family may not be together, or you may be asked to evacuate your home. Thinking about what you would do in different situations and preparing a plan with every member of your family is the first step to being prepared.
 Get a Kit
In an emergency, you will need some basic supplies. You may need to get by without power or tap water. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.

Fire Won’t Wait! Plan and Practice your Home Escape.  Know at Least 2 Ways Out!

Everyone has the responsibility to keep their families and homes safe from fire and carbon monoxide. The best ways to do this are to:

  • prevent fires from starting;
  • maintain working smoke alarms on every storey of your home and outside all sleeping areas to have as much time to safely escape as possible, if a fire does occur. not only do smoke alarms save lives, they are required by law;
  • plan and practice a home fire escape plan so everyone in the home knows exactly what to do should the smoke alarms sound in an emergency;
  • have fuel-burning appliance serviced annually by certified service technicians and install and maintain working carbon monoxide alarms adjacent to each sleeping area, and
  • consider installing residential sprinklers when building a new home or doing extensive renovations.
